We have all encountered the word “hyperactive.” It has even become a sort of buzzword or a moniker for someone who is always on the run or never seems to run out of energy.
However when you talk about hyperactivity in relation to ADHD or ADD, then that would mean that you are referring to some very specific behaviors. In someone who has ADHD or ADD, this would include the feeling of restlessness and constant fidgeting. Basically, imagine someone who can’t sit still and that they have to be moving a body part at all times. Kids with ADHD or ADD will not sit down when they are allowed to run around which is of course normal, however, they would still continuously do this even when told not to and even when other kids have already taken their seats quietly. Another symptom is that of having trouble waiting in line or having to take turns. However, not everyone who exhibits similar behavior actually has ADHD. It could be something else, entirely. ADHD is only diagnosed when a person exhibits a group of symptoms and is causing some problems with how the child or the adult functions.
So what causes ADHD or ADD? Parenting – whether it is good or bad – does not cause it. A calm home would help to stabilize children who have ADHD but family turmoil isn’t one of the causes. Studies that were done regarding it have showed that it is actually linked to genetics. If one of the parents has or has had ADHD or ADD then their child has a 70% chance of acquiring the trait as well. Studies also show that children who were diagnosed or exhibit symptoms of having ADHD or ADD don’t have the right nutrients that are needed for proper brain functions. Because the body isn’t getting all the vital nutrients the brain fails to function properly. It was seen that most of the children who have ADD or ADHD actually have low levels of amino acids and zinc in comparison to other kids. These low levels of essential fatty acids are significant in diagnosing ADD and ADHD.
So what could be done to help remedy it? There has been debate about how effective ADD and ADHD medicines are. So I recommend a more natural way. We have already discussed the importance of essential fatty acids in proper brain function and that children who exhibit symptoms of ADD and ADHD have lower levels when compared to other kids. As such, a diet which is rich in EFAs is in order. The best sources of Omega Fatty 3 acids (EFA) include tuna fish, shrimp as well as salmon. Walnut oil and Olive oil are also good sources of EFAs.
First and foremost, however, you need to learn about what might be causing ADD or ADHD in your child. Many professionals would prefer other alternative routes instead of opting for medication. Through some alternatives such as a change in their diet, you can potentially learn what causes it and hopefully avoid having to go down the medication route. Remember that those drugs will not cure ADD and ADHD, they would only help in lessening the symptoms.
