Men, especially husbands, have a negative look on their selves after they have been diagnosed of having erectile dysfunction. In some cases, this disease is the main reason why wives consider having divorce from their husbands, because they are not satisfied in bed or in their sexual life as a couple.
If you are one of these men who have this disease, it is important that you should maintain a positive outlook in life and in yourself. Yes, it is degrading to note that you are not functioning well in your sexual life, but then again, you should think positive and adhere to treatments that you and your doctor will agree upon.
And another way to take a positive view on yourself is to know and understand what this disease is all about, and how it affects the lives of many people around the world. It is also important to understand the treatment and the coping strategies you should posses in order to become more empowered and have an increased level of self-esteem.
So what is erectile dysfunction?
This disease is medically termed as Impotence or Impotency, and the person suffering from it is called impotent. Usually, the person is having difficulty gaining an erect penis or has an inability to sustain erection throughout the course of sexual activity. It is more common among older men, but latest studies had noted that any man of any age can acquire the disease.
Initially, a man can’t sustain erection because there are abnormalities in the brain center, hormones, nerves, and muscles that are responsible for erection. These abnormalities can be caused by diseases such as heart disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, obesity, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and metabolic syndrome.
But it is not only because of these diseases that erectile dysfunction can occur. Other risk factors include smoking, alcohol abuse, surgeries involving the male reproductive organ, and drug abuse or consumption of medications that have a potential adverse effect on the male genitalia.
Other causes include anxiety, depression, fatigue, stress, and psychological difficulties during sexual intercourse.
The treatment of erectile dysfunction initially starts by avoiding factors that can aggravate it, such as smoking and drinking alcohol. In addition to early prevention, it is important to consult a medical doctor and listen carefully to his discussion of the treatments. You can also seek advice from a psychiatrist, especially if the major cause of your erectile dysfunction is psychological, such as depression and anxiety.
Furthermore, it is also recommended that you avoid too much stress and engage yourself in some forms of exercise in order to stimulate your brain function and hormone production.
